In the narrative of Extinction, The Core becomes the focal point of conflict. The facility was designed to contain extraterrestrial threats, but it also became a prison for those who sought to control its output. Dr. Rockwell, the individual Overseer and AI antagonist, utilized the energy within this single Core to maintain dominance over the automated defenses and AI constructs. Progression through the story requires players to defeat three Corrupted Guardians (Scions) to obtain Element Cores used to unlock The Core, as there is only one main Extinction Core.
